EPS Conference

The European Physical Society Conference on High Energy Physics (EPS-HEP) is one of the major international conferences that reviews the field every second year since 1971 and is organised by the High Energy and Particle Physics Divison of the European Physical Society. The latest conferences in this series were held in Ghent, Venice, Vienna, Stockholm, Grenoble, Krakow, Manchester, Lisbon, Aachen

The 2021 European Physical Society conference for high energy physics will follow a purely online format. The organisation of the conference is hosted jointly by Universität Hamburg and by the research center DESY. The conference will feature plenary, review and parallel sessions covering all major areas and developments in high energy and particle physics, astroparticle physics, neutrino physics and related areas.

Stylianos Angelidakis, on behalf of the REINFORCE consortium, will give a 20 minute talk titled "The REINFORCE citizen-science project and the search for new long-lived particles at the LHC", on July 27.

After a brief description of the demonstrators comprising REINFORCE, the demonstrator titled “Search for new particles at the LHC” will be presented in detail. The demonstrantor will engage citizen-scientists in searches for new elementary particles produced in the high-energy proton-proton collisions at the LHC of CERN. To make this possible, the demonstrator adopts a three-stage architecture.
The first two stages use simulated data from the ATLAS detector to train citizens, but also to allow for a quantitative assessment of their performance and a comparison with machine learning algorithms. The third stage, on the other hand, uses real data from the ATLAS Open-Data subset, providing two research paths: (a) study of Higgs boson decays to two photons, one of which could be converted to an electron-positron pair by interaction with detector material, and (b) search for yet undiscovered long-lived particles, predicted by certain theories Beyond-the-Standard-Model. The collected citizens’ results will be assessed and analyzed.
